Gale近年推出的「China and the Modern World」系列資料庫共分為4大主題，系統性的收錄了各類檔案，均與近現代中國崛起過程中與他國的互動與衝突相關，是關心中外關係、政治史的您的研究利器。
內容簡介
英國的「印度事務部檔案（India Office Records，IOR）」包含外交活動報告、通信、官方日誌、備忘錄、小冊子、地名錄、地圖等，原件典藏於大英圖書館。「China and the Modern World: Diplomacy and Political Secrets (1860–1950)」收錄了IOR的以下三個卷宗：
- 政務秘檔 (Political and Secret Department Records; PS)：PS 7,10-12,18,20；
- 緬甸事務部檔案（Burma Office Records）：M3-4；
- 軍事部檔案（Records of the Military Department）：MIL17。
這些檔案來自政治與機要部、緬甸辦公室（1937年作為獨立部門成立）和軍事部，反映了1860-1950年間英國對亞洲和中英關係的關注。資料庫收錄的影像檔為全彩掃描，包含文書檔案、手寫註記、書信、地圖等，且可全文檢索（※手寫部份除外）。

以地理區域而言，這些檔案涉及了中國與印度、中亞各國接壤的邊疆（新疆、西藏等），亦包含了和這些地區互動密切的內陸省份（雲南等）。藉由爬梳考察報告、情勢報告、交涉備忘錄、地圖、當時的密件公文等檔案，或可做為以下研究議題的參考資料：
- 中國和英屬印度的前線地區（例如新疆、西藏、雲南、中緬邊境）發生的事件；
- 大博弈（The Great Game）：英國和俄羅斯爭奪中亞控制權引起的衝突；
- 與中英關係的演變有關的歷史事件：鴉片戰爭、1899至1901年義和團起義的餘波、第二次世界大戰中的中英合作等；
- 中英關係（一戰、二戰均為盟國關係）；
- 中國海關（1859-1950年間中國海關歷任總稅務司皆為英籍人士）；
- 邊境、邊疆；
- 滇緬公路。
資料庫介面
IOR中收有緬甸事務部檔案（Burma Office Records）的大量檔案，本次以滇緬公路（Burma Road）為例，進行說明。滇緬公路起於雲南、終於緬甸，全長近1,500公里。當時此條道路運量極大，從大後方為對日抗戰中的中國提供了相當大的支援。
進入資料庫首頁後，請在檢索框輸入「Burma Road」進行檢索。或是輸入「Burma」，再從系統建議的檢索詞中挑選。
💡除了常見的出版日期、語言之外，也可以利用「Author-Items By」和「Person-About」快速了解檔案的創作者或文件中提及的人物。
